Project Overview

I was tasked with creating an end title sequence for a film that does not have one, I chose Rio (2011).

It’s a childhood favorite of mine, known for its vibrant energy, rich color palette, and strong cultural identity.

A film as lively as Rio requires a title sequence that

reflects its energy, narrative, and cultural context.

So, I drew inspiration from the colors, the music,

and the compositions.

The Colors

The film’s characters and environments are defined by bold, warm, and highly saturated colors. I carried this visual language into the title sequence to maintain continuity with the film’s tone and atmosphere.

The Music

Inspired by Rio’s soundtrack and location (Brazil), I selected Bossa Nova, a smooth, samba-influenced genre to ground the sequence in its cultural setting and enhance the overall mood.

The Compositions

Throughout Rio, many scenes feature dense compositions that fill the frame with detail and color, leaving little negative space. For example, in jungle scenes, while the animals are the focal point, the surrounding environment — trees, leaves, and flowers — fully occupies the background.

This approach creates a sense of immersion and visual richness. I used this strategy as inspiration for my illustrations, referencing locations from the film and designing layered backgrounds that surround the viewer and reinforce the energetic tone.

The Illustrative Style

For contrast of the film’s 3D animation, I designed the sequence using flat illustrations. This stylistic shift allowed the title sequence to feel distinct while still visually aligned with the world of the film.
